The European Commission has wasted no time in responding to the latest trade policy shift from Washington, vowing swift and firm action against the newly announced US reciprocal tariffs. The US move, which the EU executive described as unjustified, marks a significant escalation in transatlantic trade tensions and threatens to disrupt long-standing economic ties between the two blocs.
The latest tariffs, part of a broader shift in US trade policy under Donald Trump, will see a 25% levy imposed on steel and aluminium imports beginning March 12.
The EU has been preparing for this moment, particularly after earlier trade frictions in 2018 saw the bloc retaliate against similar tariffs with its own countermeasures. Though those restrictions were lifted under Biden, the EU now faces the prospect of having to reinstate its trade defenses.
Brussels argues that the EU maintains some of the world’s lowest tariffs, making Washington’s latest move difficult to justify. The Commission reiterated that tariffs are essentially taxes on trade and that any attempt to undermine legal and non-discriminatory policies through protectionist measures will be met with a strong response.
What Does This Mean for Me?
The EU asserts that it has been working for decades to uphold a rules-based trading system, prioritizing low tariffs and regulatory stability to ensure global economic cooperation. The Commission is now considering its full range of options, but one thing is clear—Brussels is not prepared to let these tariffs go unchallenged.
