It is the seventh-largest banking institution in the US, with some 360 branches in the country. It was founded by Charles R. Schwab in 1971 in San Francisco, California, and is headquartered in Westlake, Texas. The company took advantage of financial deregulation in the 1970s to pioneer discount sales of equity securities. It was the first company to offer round-the-clock order entry and quotation services. Besides its corporate offerings, the company provides services for retail brokerage and banking services to individual investors, as well as retirement plan services.
